Sophie Allport & House of Bruar - Q&A

Sophie Allport

How did you get interested/started in your creative field?

I’ve always loved to draw and paint, and my parents encouraged me to follow my passion from a young age. I graduated from Leeds University in 1994 in Graphic Art and Design, specialising in Illustration and then headed to London, where I worked as a freelance illustrator for many years. It’s from there that Sophie Allport started.

What is the inspiration/ethos behind the brand?

We’ve always wanted to create unique designs and products that make our customers smile, and that’s always been one of our core values at Sophie Allport.

What is the best thing about your job?

I love seeing our designs transform from initial ideas and sketches right through to the physical product!

What is a daily work routine like for you?

We’ve adapted recently for hybrid working, but I’ve always loved working from home. I tend to work best sitting at my kitchen table with my dogs at my feet, coffee in one hand and paintbrush in the other. Being a mum of three boys means that I’m often running around between work, so every day can be different!

Out of all of your collections to date, do you have a personal favourite?

Oh, that's such a difficult question! It actually changes each week. Our Bees design will always be a firm favourite as it was a redesign of our first ever design Busy Bees. I think it depends on what season we are in as well, we’ve just launched our new Poppy Meadow collection, which I love, and we’ve got some other new designs launching very soon.

What have been the biggest challenges and achievements so far?

I think Covid was a huge challenge for every business, adapting to a new way of working in a more digital world and ensuring our staff and customers were safe. One big achievement for us this year is that we are celebrating our 15th birthday – the past 15 years have flown by!

What does the Sophie Allport brand represent?

We believe in lifestyle for living. Beautiful prints yet still perfectly practical designs for everyday living. There is true contentment in the little things in life – from a cup of tea in your favourite mug to dressing your table for that special family occasion.

What products would you recommend the winner should select with the gift voucher?

Perhaps some new linens to refresh their kitchen and spruce up their table setting. We’ve got lots of lovely bedding sets and cushions for a mini bedroom makeover, or if you have pets, maybe treat them to a comfy new pet bed and treat tin!
