Description
Charcoal rendering of a highland cow calf looking out toward the viewer.
Notes
A minimal piece, 'Isla' captures the focused yet innocent appearance of a highland cow calf. The majesty of a highland cow's hair is particularly hard to capture in its unkempt nature and unpredictable directionality, but Hargreaves has captured it with skill and precision unexpected in charcoal. The eyes are poignant in this piece; there is a careful glimmer within each of them and a calm focus directed at the viewer which reflects the nature of a cow, capturing the essence of a species. Finished against a plain backdrop, this piece encourages the viewer to focus on the creature, and almost return the stare, as through nothing else exists between or beyond 'Isla.'
